They have no current plans to sell the brewery to property developers and they are hoping to sell it as a going concern but have had no offers as yet. Any offers should be directed in the first instance to Ian Robinson and he can be contacted at the brewery on 01922 644453 ext 202.
He has also confirmed that there is a short term contract for another brewer to brew the full range of Highgate Davenports beers and their supply will continue.
Campaign to save the brewery
Gary Timmins (CAMRA West Mids, Regional Director) and I did an interview on the Carl Chinn Show on Radio WM on Sunday 20th June. I know quite a few of you have heard it and it was well received. We hope to have started the ball rolling to save the brewery.
A facebook site has been set up to ‘Save Highgate Brewery’ which has around 1400 members, Friends of Highgate have been asked by its author John Wilkes to take over leadership of the campaign which we are happy to do. We have also set up our own Friends of Highgate facebook site which is being hosted by young CAMRA member Paul Flint.
With the help of FoHB member Keith Watkins who is also ‘Pubs Preservation Officer’ for Walsall CAMRA and Trevor Jones from Walsall Civic Society, we hope to raise the listing of the brewery with English Heritage from ‘grade 2’ to‘grade 2 star’, offering extra protection from redevelopment.
At the Friends of Highgate committee meeting, on 28th June, we decided to answer the call to hold a public open meeting which has now been arranged for:
Wednesday 14th July 2010, 7.30pm till 9.30pm at Walsall Town Hall.
We hope to further raise public awareness of the situation and discuss any options which may be open to save the brewery. We are inviting the local MPs and Councillors as well as, representatives from Global Star, Walsall Civic Society and CAMRA. We are inviting coverage from the local press and radio and I ask you all to attend and make our voices heard
Friends of Highgate Brewery will continue to operate and our main aim is now to spearhead the campaign to save the brewery. As such we have decided to suspend all non ring fenced charity donations and use our assets as a fighting fund.
We will continue to hold our away meetings as advertised and issue the usual 50p discount vouchers for beer, the venues and dates are as follows:
The Black Country Arms, 10th January 2011
The scheduled trips to Liverpool on 14th August and Hydes Brewery on 23rd October will also go ahead as planned.
All meetings at the brewery (including the ‘Old Ale Launch Day’ scheduled for 13th November) are now unfortunately cancelled until further notice.
We may be able to hold a Christmas party at another venue and will inform you nearer the time.
Thank you all for your support and understanding and I urge you to back the campaign to save the brewery in any way you can.
Cheers Everyone
Steve Orford
